BEING DIRECTOR

Your Personal Goals are:

Your personal and group amusement, Collaborating with others, the Creation of a legendary fiction and the Arbitration of the game’s rules.

Your Game Goals are:

Make the world feel legendary and real; the characters live legendary experiences and play to see what happens next.

Your Main Tasks are:

Framing Scenes and Arbitrate the game’s rules when necessary, particularly if an Action demands a Test or not. When Framing Scenes, consider using your Moves or the Situation Prompts provided by the Scenario.

DIRECTOR

You chose to be a Director! Next you will have some cards that summarize what you have to do in every step of the game session. If you don’t understand something, mouseover (or tap if you are on a mobile device) over the icon to get more info and the pages where that is explained in the official handbook. To your right you have a tab showing what are your Objectives and main Tasks.

DO YOU HAVE A SCENARIO?

Read or paraphrase the Scenario Introduction. Answer the questions that may arise.
Read or paraphrase the Community Principles. If you need to ask anything, do.
Read or paraphrase the Scenario Premise. If you need to ask anything, do.

BACKGROUND

Read or paraphrase the descriptions of every Background. Ask the Players to each choose one of them. It would be ideal that every Player chooses a different Background, though certain Scenarios may be fun to repeat some Backgrounds.

ORIGIN

When everyone has chosen their Background, ask them to read (out loud or for themselves) their options for Origin and choose one of them. In this case they may choose more than one option, as long as none of them contradicts each other.

LEGENDARY TRAIT

When everyone has chosen their Origin, ask them to read (out loud or for themselves) their options for Legendary Trait and choose one of them. Then they should share it with the rest of the group before moving forward.

DRIVES

When everyone has chosen their Legendary Trait, ask them to read (out loud or for themselves) their options for Drive and choose one of them. If they don’t contradict themselves they can pick more than one. Then they should share it with the rest of the group before moving forward.

When everyone has chosen their Drive, ask them to read out loud the question to the Bond related to it. Now they should decide (asking for volunteers or choosing someone who accepts) how the answer links their Drive with another PC.

FIRST SCENE

Frame the first Scene of the game. The Scenario will provide you with ideas to choose from and make it your own.
After every description ask “What does your character do?” or something similar. If you describe a dramatic obstacle between the Action of the PC and the Intent of the Player, ask for a Test.

ENDING THE ACT

Make sure every Player has a chance to explore the fiction and their PC. Keep Framing Scenes until it's time to close Act Zero. When each of the Players has had at least a scene and you end Act Zero, announce Interlude Zero.

REWRITE

Ask the Players if they wish to rewrite their Origins and/or their Drives. If you feel appropriate or a Player asks for it, bargain if any PC may change their Legendary Trait or get a new one.

ASK THE CHORUS

Ask the Chorus what they think of the Principles, Premise and PCs. Probably the Chorus hasn’t decided that the Premise is answered and surely you may continue with a new Act.

WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN

Decide if a significant amount of time has passed, or not, between Acts. Consider “Wiping the Slate Clean”. Once this is done, you may end the Interlude and proceed to Open Act One.

OPEN THE ACT

Frame the first Scene of the Act. If you have no ideas, look at your Moves or the Situation Prompts provided by the Scenario. After every description ask “What does your character do?” or something similar. If you describe a dramatic obstacle between the Action of the PC and the Intent of the Player, ask for a Test.

SITUATION PROMPTS

Situation Prompts will help you set up scenes that try to answer the Scenario Premise. Each Scenario will provide a series of Situation Prompts depending on which moment of the game you are.

Try to give every Player the chance to explore the fiction and their PC. Keep Framing Scenes until it’s time to close the Act. When each of the Players has had at least one scene and you close the Act, announce the Interlude.

REWRITE

Ask the Players if they wish to rewrite their Origins and/or their Drives. If you feel appropriate or a Player asks for it, bargain if any PC may change their Legendary Trait or get a new one.

ASK THE CHORUS

Ask the Chorus what they think of the Principles, Premise and PCs. If the Chorus has decided that the Premise is answered, announce the Epilogue and skip the next Step.

GO TO EPILOGUE
